About Srinagar
Thecity of lakes, Srinagar is located in the western part of the state of
Jammu and Kashmir, in the northern region of India. Srinagar lies around 900
kms north of Delhi and is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and
Kashmir. It is the pride of the beautiful valley of Kashmir. The grand
Himalayas, calm lakes, floating houseboats and Shikaras and majestic Mughal
architecture are the highlights of this mesmerizing city. It is also known
for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. River Jhelum passes
through Srinagar city. Languages spoken here are Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, and
English.
Srinagar is located in the valley of Kashmir, world famous as a heaven on
earth. The Mughal emperor Jahangir was so captivated by the beauty of this
valley that he exclaimed "Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto,
hamin asto, hamin asto" (If there is a heaven on earth, it's here, it's
here, it's here).
Getting There
Air : Various airlines fly to Srinagar from New Delhi, Chandigarh,
Amritsar, Jammu and there are flights operating from Srinagar to Leh and
back. Flights are more frequent during the summer Tourist Season.
Rail : Srinagar's railhead is Jammu, which in turn is connected to
all parts of the country, including Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Mumbai and
Kanyakumari.
Road : Srinagar is connected by an all weather road to Jammu, which
in turn is connected to many parts of North India.
Major Attractions in Srinagar
Dal Lake : The Dal is a famous tourist spot in Srinagar. The
houseboat and Shikara communities have lived for centuries on the Dal, and
they have such a complete infrastructure on the lake, that they never have
to step on land! Doctors, tailors, bakers- one can see them all in tiny
wooden shops on the lake, near lovely vegetable gardens and acres of lotus
gardens.

Mughal Gardens : Kashmir was a favorite relaxing spot of the Mughal
emperors. These emperors came here and planted gardens with stepped terraces
and flowing watercourses. It was like summer vacation spot for the Mughals
who visited Kashmir to get some relief from the heat of the plains of North
India where the business of governance kept them busy. Built at a height
above the city, Cheshma Shahi is the first Mughal garden one will pass after
Nehru Park., its views are as prodigious as its layout.
Nishat is the next garden along the road that encircles the Dal lake, built
by empress Nur Jahan's brother Asaf Khan. The third Mughal garden - the
Shalimar - was planted by Jehangir, the Mughal emperor, whose love for
Kashmir was legendary.
Hazaratbal Mosque : Across the Dal from Shalimar, the mosque of
Hazratbal is situated. It is the only one of its kind architecturally in
Kashmir. It is made of white marble with a dome and a minaret, Hazratbal is
the installation of a single hair of the Prophet Mohammed, exhibited to the
public on certain days of the year.
Adventure Sports in Srinagar
Canoeing & Water Skiing : Kashmir has many lakes - Dal, Nagin,
Mansbal and Wular, offering excellent spots for canoeing, whether it is a
Shikara or a racing skull. These lakes are inter-linked with each other. The
river Jhelum which flows through the entire length of the valley also
connects with all the lakes. Another interesting water sports popular are
water trekking and water skiing.
