About Leh-Ladakh
Leh : Leh is located to the north of the Indus River at an elevation
of 3600m above the sea level and is the headquarter of Leh district. It also
the largest town of the region and is dominated by the nine-storey Namgyal
Palace and Namgyal Tsemo (victory peak). It was built by Tashi Namgyal
celebrating his victory in reuniting the Upper and Lower Ladakh.. Later, Leh
became an important center for trade in Central Asia. Leh remained merely a
headquarter of Ladakh district until 1974, when Ladakh was opened for
foreign tourists. Since then Leh became the center for tourism related
activities in the region. Leh also has many Buddhist monasteries in the
nearby areas.
Ladakh : Ladakh is surrounded by two of the mightiest mountain
ranges in the world, the great Himalayas and the Karakoram. It lies at an
altitude that ranges from about 2,750m to 7,673m. Monks and nuns reside at
Thiksey Monastery. Ladakh's geographical and cultural diversity attracts one
and all. It is also known as 'Little Tibet' due to geographical and cultural
similarities with Tibet. The features of Ladakhi people, their clothes,
dialects are similar to Tibetan and Mongoloid then Indian. Buddhism is the
dominant religion in Ladakh. As you reach Ladakh you can notice various
walls that are long up to 2 to 3m, decorated with engraved stones bearing
the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" and Chortens which symbolizes
Buddha's mind . The Villages and Mountains are adorned with gompas or
monasteries residing thousand of Buddhist monks.
Getting There
Air : Leh-Ladakh is directly connected to Delhi, Chandigarh and
Srinagar through regular flights. There are also direct flights once a week
from Leh to Srinagar and twice a week to Jammu.
Road :There are two overland routes to Leh-the roads from Srinagar
and Manali. While the Leh-Srinagar route is operative from June to October,
the Leh-Manali route is operative from July to September.

Major Attractions in Leh-Ladakh
The Leh Palace : It is one of the major attractions in Ladakh. Built
in the 17th century, this palace is in a damaged condition, but still it
attracts innumerable tourists.
Namgyal Tsemo Gompa : The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, built in 1430, owns a
three-story high Buddha image, ancient manuscripts and frescoes. The fort
above this gompa provides splendid view of Leh.
Nubra valley : The Nubra means Ldumra (the valley of flowers), this
valley is located in the north of Leh. The average altitude of the valley is
about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The main attraction in this area is
Bactarian Camels (Shaggy double hump Camel) around sand dunes, Deskit &
Samstanling monasteries and Khardung la Pass which is at an altitude of
18,380 feet above sea level.
Adventure Sports in Leh-Ladakh : Leh is famous for trekking and the
treks from Spituk to the Markha valley and Lamayuru gompa to Chiling village
alongside the Zanskar River are the most popular treks in the region.
Another trek route is from Likir to Temisgam. Treks are open from the June
end upto mid October. Apart from trekking, polo is also equally popular in
Leh. From July to September, one can even enjoy rafting in the Zanskar
River.
