Architecture and History
The Lake Palace, one of the most splendid palaces in the world, appears to
emerge from the turquoise waters of the Lake Pichola. This exquisite
monument, built in white marble, was constructed in the 17th century on a
natural foundation of 4 acres of rock. The original name of the palace was
Jagniwas which was named after its founder Maharana Jagjit Singh. The
Maharana was the ruler of Jaipur from 1628 to 1654 and was very friendly
with Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and asked his craftsmen to copy some of the
beautiful buildings at Agra. The successive rulers used the palace as their
summer resort, and conducted their regal durbars in its courtyards. These
courtyards were lined with columns, had pillared terraces, cascading
fountains and beautiful gardens which added to its charisma. The rooms here
are embellished with cusped arches, inland stones of pink, and green lotus
leaves and painted mirrors. The beautiful chambers like the Bada Mahal, Kush
Mahal, Ajjan Niwas, Phool Mahal and Dhola Mahall enhance the romance of the
elegant setting.
